THE OCHRE MUSEUM
Museum retracing the history of ochre extraction in the commune, used for church frescoes.
This museum, inaugurated on July 2, 1994, traces the history of ochre extraction in the commune since the Middle Ages. This ochre was used for frescoes in churches, notably those in Brinay, 20 km away. The objects on display bear witness to a life that remains in a corner of everyone's memory. The history of the ochre works, and in parallel that of the village of Saint-Georges-sur-la-Prée, as well as the way ochre was mined, are retraced with the help of models, drawings and archival documents - including a book on ochre mining from 1851 to 1864 found in an attic in Saint-Georges. In the dealer's boutique, you can admire and familiarize yourself with yellow, red, green and blue pigments, as well as brushes and binders. The museum also features permanent exhibits focusing on the memory of this small village, created entirely thanks to donations from local residents: objects from pre-mechanization farming, tools from the craft life of yesteryear - a complete collection of cooper's tools. Upstairs, an ecomuseum room recreates an old bedroom. Don't miss: class photos of the villagers, the oldest dating back to 1873. And if you want to let your imagination run wild, don't miss the 8th Collection de Sable du Monde! 5,124 tubes of sand from different countries are on display. From France to Italy to Spain, the colors and sizes of the sand grains will take you on a journey around the world!
