THE BUILDING
A remarkable belfry built in 1509 and classified as a historic monument in Sancerre, it houses a meeting place.
Also known as the Saint-Jean Tower, this 8 m long, 20 m high monument was built in 1509 and has been listed as a historic monument since 1913. A chapel was built on the first floor. The second floor served as a meeting place for the commune's aldermen. On the second floor are the bells, named Françoise, Marie, Pauline and Gabrielle. Following the siege of Sancerre in 1573, the belfry bell and clock were removed by order of General de La Châtre, commander of the royal armies.
