Day 1: Sofia

Visit of the city of Sofia: the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Church of Saint Sophia, the Russian Church of Saint Nicholas, the Banya Bachi Mosque, the National History Museum and the Church of Boyana. Stroll through the central covered market and along Vitosha Boulevard, the main pedestrian area.

Day 2: Rila

Steps: Rila

Visit of the most important monastery in Bulgaria, on the slopes of Mount Rila, about 100 km from Sofia (2 hours by bus to the village of Rila). Hike, 1 hour and 15 minutes return, to the tomb of Saint John of Rila in the heart of nature. Possibility to spend the night at the monastery, or return to Sofia.

Day 3: Plovdiv - Batchkovo

Steps: Bachkovo, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv

Visit of the old town of Plovdiv: wooden houses of Bulgarian Renaissance style, Byzantine churches and a remarkable Roman amphitheater. Visit of the Batchkovo monastery, listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Night in Stara Zagora.

Day 4: Nessebar - rocky peninsula on the Black Sea coast

Steps: Bourgas, Nessebar

The city of forty churches! Walk through the streets of the city to discover the Byzantine vestiges and the wooden and stone houses of the 18th and 19th centuries. Swimming if the weather permits! Depending on your schedule, stopover in Bourgas before going to Nessebar, its downtown and its seaside promenade.

Day 5: Varna

Steps: Varna

One of the pearls of the Bulgarian coastline. Visit the Roman baths, the Archaeology museum and the Marine museum. Walk along the northern beaches of the city. Night in Varna.

Day 6: Veliko Tarnovo

Steps: Veliko Tarnovo

Welcome to Veliko Tarnovo, capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Visit of the city, a part of which is composed of houses suspended from the rock walls. Discovery of the ruins of the citadel of Tsarevets. Visit of the village of Arbanassi.

Day 7: Troyan - Koprivshtitsa

Steps: Troyan, Koprivshtitsa

Visit of the Troyan monastery, whose buildings date from the 15th century, except for the 19th century church with superb frescos. Koprivshtitsa, a small city-museum of the 19th century, in the national Renaissance style. Return to Sofia.
