Rwanda is the country of cycling. The first edition of the Tour du Rwanda dates back to 1988; the first local professional cycling team was created in 2006. But even before entering the competition, Rwanda was and remains a country of bicycles. For a long time, Rwandans have used the bicycle as a means of transportation, more accessible and less expensive than the motorcycle or the car. Thus, quite naturally, road cycling, as well as mountain biking, have entered the panoply of possible activities. Cycling enthusiasts can consider Rwanda as a destination of choice. To discover the country gently, to explore the most beautiful corners, to criss-cross a thousand and one hills and to meet a million smiles, cycling trips are an interesting option. You can go for half a day, a day or several days. The Congo Nil Trail, along Lake Kivu, is the most famous route. This circuit is accessible to any traveler in good physical condition and trained. Specialized agencies can assist you on the spot and guide you with daily logistic support.
Volcanoes National Park offers thirteen possible activities and treks, including mountain gorilla tracking. Nyungwe National Park offers seven guided hiking tours. All of these tours must be booked online with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) through its online booking and payment portal (https://visitrwandabookings.rdb.rw/). Akagera National Park safaris and Nyungwe National Park treks can be booked directly through the park office (www.akageranationalpark.org, www.africanparks.org), a local tour operator, or the hotel you choose to stay at.
