Be careful, in Zambia we eat at English time, so early. Don't be tempted to fast for not anticipating the closing of restaurants. Most restaurants close after 9:30 pm. During the day, there are places that are open non-stop, especially in the malls. In the morning, cafés are open early (from 7am).

Budget & Tips

In the malls that exist everywhere in Zambia, you will always find a Shoprite, Pick'N'Pay or Spar supermarket that prepares Zambian food in a takeaway stand. It is really cheap, you can eat a balanced menu and go on a picnic easily.

What costs extra

Tipping. Tipping is officially prohibited in Zambia, but in practice it is often expected. However, be careful not to give large sums of money, which can devalue the work. For example, you can give 2 Kw to the person who helps you carry your luggage or to a guard. In tourist restaurants, if the tip is not included and you are satisfied with the service, you can leave up to 10% of the bill. In lodges and safaris, if you want to thank your guide or staff, wait until the end of your stay. You can also leave a sum of money to be distributed among the staff in a special kitty at the reception. The amount of 5 US$ per person per day is the norm.

The local way

Safari lodges offer all-inclusive packages with three meals a day, snacks, drinks, etc.

In town, local restaurants serve nshima, a maize puree that Zambians love, accompanied by meat or fish in sauce.

Smokers

Smoking is not allowed in restaurants, but if they have a terrace, it is often possible outside.
