Practical information : Accomodation Mozambique
Budget & Tips
Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world, Mozambique can quickly become an expensive destination, especially Maputo. The good news is that there is a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, from the very basic to the very sophisticated. Expect to pay around €10-15 for a night in a dormitory in a youth hostel, or a little less for a campground. Between 80 and 200 € a night in a charming hotel or guesthouse. As for the extraordinary places for the happy few in the middle of an island or in a luxury villa, you should plan between 500 and 1,000 € per night! Do not hesitate to contact the establishments directly. The prices will sometimes be cheaper than on the online booking sites and above all, the revenue will go to the right place. Also, off-peak periods will always be more interesting.
To be booked
When you drive for hours, even on a bumpy track, to get to a heavenly place, it is better to have booked your night, especially during the western summer in July-August in Vilankulos. Often the most beautiful lodges have only a few rooms. During the South African school vacations in December and January, accommodation, especially in Ponta do Ouro, Bilene and Tofo, is quickly taken over. It is best to book in advance during this period at these destinations.
What's very local
Self catering rentals are very common. Imported from neighboring South Africa, the principle is simple: you pay for a studio or a fully equipped house, with kitchen, living room and especially an outdoor barbecue. Often, the houses have large capacities, designed to accommodate entire families. You can find local cooks to make things easier or go to the local market to pick up fresh fish and vegetables.
For food lovers
Most of the guesthouses offer on-site dining and sometimes they are very good restaurants, with a variety of flavors, such as the tables d'hôte of Dunes de Dovela, Casa Babi, Travessia Lodge and a few other nice addresses that are great tables from breakfast.
Tourist traps
Sometimes you have to be careful with fake rental ads on sites like Airbnb, which are quite common in Mozambique.
