Practical information : Move & Laze around Maldives
Budget & Tips
While vacations in the Maldives are expensive, there are a few activities you can enjoy with complete peace of mind, at no extra cost. Sunbathing on a deckchair with your eyes in the blue of the lagoon is the first of these. We also recommend that you buy fins, mask and snorkel so you can splash around in the lagoon in search of reef sharks, rays and colorful fish. Very few island hotels lend this equipment free of charge, and it costs around ten dollars (excluding tax) a day to rent it.
What's very local
By staying on an island hotel, you'll have very little contact with Maldivians. Resort employees have their own quarters on the island, and this is where they stay after their shift. Nevertheless, every island (whether local or private) has at least one soccer or volleyball field, where the men come to play at the end of the day.
Your documents please
Divers should be sure to pack a recent medical certificate of fitness for diving in English, as well as their PADI, SSI or other certification.
To be booked
Group activities (diving, sunset cruises, angling, etc.) must be booked with the diving club or your hotel reception. Space on the boats is limited, and some outings are very popular, so it's best to book as soon as you arrive. It's also imperative to book your spa treatments, and to arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time.
Main events
The island hotels live to the rhythm of the arrival and departure of international flights, rather than any local festivals. The Ramadan period nevertheless has an impact on life on the islands, especially locally. Business hours become more fluid, days are particularly quiet and restaurants and cafés may be closed.
Tourist traps
The Maldives is a very safe country, and there are no tourist traps or scams in particular.
