Practical information : Accomodation Slovakia
Budget & Tips
There's a whole range of accommodation available to travelers in Slovakia, with prices to match. In the low season, you can find a nice room in a hostel or hotel for between €50 and €60, a rate that rises and can even double in the high season, especially during the long Easter weekends or during the festive season and mountain vacations. All methods of payment are accepted, and most small hotels even accept credit cards.
To be booked
It is advisable to book your nights in the High Tatras, the most touristic region of the country, in summer and winter. This is also the case throughout the country during the holiday season when demand is very high. Apart from these busy periods, it is quite easy to get a last-minute reservation.
What's very local
Slovakia is a mountainous country, so there are many chalets available for rent all over the countryside. It is often in these isolated places that locals come to celebrate their birthday with friends or the New Year. It's an attractive and authentic option. In hotel establishments, there are very few double beds, the local technique is to glue two single beds together and, at the level of the duvets, it is often each one's own. If, when making your reservations, you hesitate between a hotel or a penzión, we recommend the more authentic penzión (hostel or guesthouse); these establishments are usually run by families. The food is often good home-cooked and the service and atmosphere are less impersonal than in hotels. Apartment rentals are gradually starting to develop in the country's biggest cities, they are often occupied by foreign travellers.
For food lovers
Breakfast is sometimes included in the rate and the local habit to start the day is to start the day with a salty meal. So for breakfast, you can find scrambled eggs, omelettes or sausages. The more upscale establishments often offer an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast with sweet options.
Smokers
The majority of hotels offer non-smoking rooms. If you are a smoker, choose a room with a balcony so you don't have to go down in front of your hotel to smoke.
Tourist traps
Most "mid-range" establishments are often expensive in terms of the services offered. It's not really a tourist attraction, but a local standard, which is why you'll often feel better in a family-run hostel.
