Practical information : Accomodation Canary Islands
Budget & Tips
Expect to pay between €80 and €150 for an apartment or double room in a 3-star hotel or resort. For those on a budget, you'll still find a few pensiones at €40 a night, but the number is dwindling. For a luxury hotel, expect to pay from €160 to €300 and more. Resorts in the south offer the most all-inclusive packages, with discounts to watch out for on their websites. You should also be aware that hotels are increasingly charging different rates depending on the day of the week, more expensive on Fridays and Saturdays, and that here too, since the Covid pandemic and the two-year halt in tourist flows, more and more hotels are charging so-called "dynamic" prices, sometimes changing several times a day, depending on demand.
To be booked
Some important dates like the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but also the period from Christmas to January 6th, date of the Magi and days of gifts, it is strongly advised to book in advance, as the festivities attract customers from all over and the Christmas period corresponds to the holiday dates of the Canary Islanders who love to travel from island to island.
What's very local
You'll find casas rurales- a kind of guesthouse, but without the owners - on many islands, especially El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma. These are usually Canarian-style houses, equipped with all comforts, sometimes with swimming pools and pretty gardens. The perfect way to get up close and personal with local life. Tourist offices and associations dedicated to green tourism will be able to help you.
Another peculiarity that particularly affects hotels and hotel bookings is the peak season, which runs from December to the end of March, and combines a number of reasons for prices to rise and bookings to be made well in advance: a fairly close geographical location, with more pleasant weather than the rest of Europe at this time of year; a strong presence of older tourists (the "silver") who come to spend the winter in the sun and book year after year for at least one month; the management of bookings "reserved" for large tour operators during this period.
For food lovers
Most hotels offer a breakfast, often in the form of a buffet, which takes into account the Anglo-Saxon and German wishes of most guests. With bacon, small grilled sausages, poridge, etc. But also the most local, tostada, toasted bread, with oil and tomato or churros and even some pastries. They are copious, not always unforgettable. They are not always included in the price, please specify. Simpler hotels do not offer this service, but there will always be a bar or cafeteria open for breakfast nearby.
Smokers
As in other establishments, the anti-smoking law applies to hotels since the beginning of 2011.
