THE FERRY BRIDGE
A transporter bridge renovated between 2016 and 2019, which hosts guided tours as well as dramatized tours.
Inaugurated in 1900, the Rochefort ferry bridge was built to alleviate the inconveniences and constraints associated with crossing the Charente by ferry between Rochefort and Échillais while allowing maritime traffic to continue. In operation until 1967, this bridge was replaced by a lift span bridge, itself replaced by the Charente estuary viaduct. Abandoned for many years, the ferry bridge has enjoyed a second lease of life since 1994, when it resumed service for cyclists and pedestrians. After undergoing renovation work between 2016 and 2019, it has just reopened to the public in the summer of 2020. Guided tours and dramatised visits are available.
