Created in 1967, the Pyrenees national park covers over 50,000 ha and several departments, including the Pyrenees-Atlantiques. It protects the Néouvielle reserve, a remarkable natural area of 100 km long along the Spanish border and 3 to 15 km large. Leaning against the Spanish Ordesa National Park, it includes great sites like the peaks of Midi d'Ossau, Balaitous, Vignemale and Néouvielle, the cirques of Gavarnie and Troumousse, exceeding 3000 m. Walkers will admire the waterfalls, the large forests and many high mountain lakes from where Gaves, Adour, Nestes take their source. The fauna and flora, of course flourish peacefully. Marmots, Izards, golden eagles, vultures, peregrine falcons and tetras live here, the bear is more discreet and never seen. As for flora, helianthemum, purple gentian, Pyrenees valerian, martagon lily and saxifrage and grow everywhere.
