THE PRIORY OF MERLAND
A priory known for its loopholes, buttresses, crenellated defensive path and 11 carved capitals.
This priory was founded by the monks of Chancelade Abbey. In the heart of a magnificent clearing, the church and a few monastic features have survived the centuries. The present 16th-century edifice resembles a small fortress, with its loopholes, buttresses and crenellated defensive path. Inside, 11 sculpted capitals are the remains of the former chapel. Nearby, the prior's private dwelling features a 16th-century tower. A little removed from the world and conducive to meditation, this setting hosted the filming of the TV movie Cartouche.
