MUSÉE NATIONAL DE PRÉHISTOIRE
Museum featuring collections of prehistoric tools and art from the surrounding area
It's THE museum in France's prehistory capital, and a must for visitors to nearby shelters. Thanks to the acquisition of pieces of local origin, but also from other regions of France, Nathalie Fourment, the director of this magnificent museum, and her invaluable collaborators, have recreated the complete chronological order of the Palaeolithic period, from the settlement of the first hunter-gatherers in Aquitaine 400,000 years ago, to the end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Collections of prehistoric tools and artworks unearthed in the surrounding area are presented with the same chronological and geological focus. Flintknapping and the many European Venuses are also featured. The tour covers lithic and bone industry, engraved and sculpted blocks - the world's leading collection in this field - furniture, burials and prehistoric fauna. During the summer vacations, the museum offers a parietal furniture art workshop (booking required), where children can transform themselves into prehistoric artists using the tools of our ancestors.
