CHURCH OF SAINT ASTIER
A thousand-year-old fortified church on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Two-storey bell tower, crypt, Gothic chapels...
The21st-century building, restored in the 15thcentury , is a listed historic monument. During the Hundred Years' War, it was damaged by the English. In 1894, a crypt containing the relics of Saint Astier (according to legend) was discovered. Its fortifications are remarkable: crenellations, buttresses and machicolations give it the air of a fortified castle. Its high, massive two-storey bell tower (48 meters) served as a watchtower for Resistance fighters in 1944. Free tours are organized in summer by the Tourist Office (booking required).
