MONTAIGNE CASTLE AND TOWER
New animations for the summer 2022. On June 4 and 5, rendez-vous in the gardens. Montaigne Night on June 18. July and 2nd.
The tower-library of the castle where the great Michel de Montaigne lived still evokes the pleasure the philosopher took in writing his famous Essays, under the famous ceiling where the maxims of the authors he admired are still inlaid. The chapel, with its recently restored frescoes, was connected to the author's room, located above it, so that he could follow the service, even if he was bedridden by the gravel that plagued him. The original castle burned down in 1885: only the library tower remains from Montaigne's time. The castle was rebuilt in a neo-Renaissance style, and was the property of Pierre Magne, minister of Napoleon III. The village church has a saintongeaise façade and displays the Templar cross under the entrance capitals. Inside, you can find the old bell, an altarpiece and a confessional of the XVIIIth century, a way of the cross signed by Gilbert Privat... A walk is necessary! A booklet provided at the reception desk presents the different species of trees in the park. Go and greet Jus de Carotte and Viking, the donkey and the pony! The castle has vineyards that cover 19.10 hectares. A tasting of Montaigne Wine is offered at any time during the opening hours of the site, included in the entrance ticket for the visit of the castle or the Tower of Montaigne. Activities for children are regularly organized, such as an Easter egg hunt. Good to know: the visit of the park is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
