LA BASTIDE DE BEAUMONT
This tour plunges you into the medieval history of Beaumont du Périgord, a bastide town with a rich fortified heritage.
The town of Beaumont-du-Périgord is laid out in a checkerboard pattern, with streets laid out around a central square and covered market. In Beaumont, there were 16 corner houses, 7 of which remain, including a half-timbered house called Maison Laphite, the oldest in the bastide. The bastide has also preserved part of its ramparts. The Luzier gate still stands. It dates back to the founding of the bastide and had a defensive role. The fortified houses on Rue Féliciane feature large 13th-century ogival windows. Simple, small windows could be used as loopholes. At the corner of this street is the Tour de Bannes, which originally stood at the edge of the ramparts until the French Revolution. In rue Rattier, where the oldest house in Beaumont stands at the corner, there is still a shop with 2 ogival doors. On the first floor, there are still two rings in the wall, from which a canvas was hung to protect the store. The remarkable 13th-14th-century fortified church stands out at the corner of the square, with its elaborate facade and two towers. It was designed as a citadel, with an internal well dug to support a siege. Inhabitants could store their belongings here. This church-fortress features 4 towers, the tallest of which is adorned with machicolations, crenellations, archways and firing holes, and rises to a 30-metre-high keep. One of the four towers serves as a bell tower, while the other two protect the eastern ramparts. The four towers were linked by a parapet walk.
