WORKSHOP/MUSEUM OF THE WEAVER AND THE CHARENTAISE
Atelier-Musée du Tisserand et de la Charentaise, the birthplace of the famous slipper, organizes animated visits and exhibitions.
The Atelier-Musée du Tisserand et de la Charentaise traces the history of textile activity in the Périgord-Limousin region, the birthplace of the Charentaise slipper. It exhibits contemporary textile creations, managed by the association Fils et Métiers. All the regional textile know-how, from the work of hemp and wool to the technique of sewing and turning of the Charentaise slippers, are presented here. The rooms of the castle housing the museum, named after the many local factories, recall this rich textile past. You can see the spinning mill, the machines for cutting and sewing the famous charentaises. The first slipper workshops were created between 1880 and 1910, living off the scraps of stationery felts. At the beginning of the 20th century, sales of slippers increased considerably: the stationery felt factories then began to produce felt specifically for slippers. The charentaise was born. It will be the wealth of the Haut-Périgord until the 1970s, with more than 70 companies producing charentaises around Nontron. Then globalization came along, and it became impossible to fight international competition. Today, the slipper is again in fashion thanks to telecommuting and our desire for cocooning. Let's hope that fashion and confinements will bring back to Nontronnais country the know-how that made its glory! The weavers' market takes place on the weekend of Pentecost. The CPIE also organizes animated visits.
