CHÂTEAU DE MONTFORT
Castle near Sarlat with keep and white tower facing south, built in the century. Only visitable from the village.
Built for the first time in the 9th century, the castle of Montfort was destroyed three times during the Middle Ages. Its location as a lookout on the Dordogne river and its proximity to Sarlat made it a very disputed site. It belonged successively to the Viscounts of Turenne, the Duke of Roquelaure and, just before the Revolution of 1789, to the Duke of Noailles. It became the property of a doctor from Périgord at the beginning of the 19th century, whose descendant had a keep built around 1905. The white tower facing south was added in 1926 and the ramparts were restored.
