ST. JOSEPH'S MONASTERY
A monastery located in a high place of Christian prayer, and a place of apparition, welcoming retreatants of all kinds.
Cotignac is an important place of Christian prayer, because it is the place where the two greatest saints of our Christian history, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, have appeared. On June 7, 1660, the day looked hot. A young shepherd from Cotignac, Gaspard Ricard, 22 years old, led his flock on the eastern slope of the Bessillon. Around one o'clock in the afternoon the heat is intense. Thirsty, he lay down on the rocky ground when suddenly a man of imposing stature stood beside him and pointed to a rock, saying, "I am Joseph, take it away and you will drink." The rock is heavy, but the venerable old man, as the stories of the time say, repeats his command. The shepherd obeys, moves the rock, and discovers fresh water beginning to trickle down. He immediately drank greedily. When he gets up, the apparition has already disappeared. Without further ado, he goes to the village to tell the good news and the curious arrive. Three hours after the event, in a place that everyone knew had no spring, abundant water flowed. The Benedictine nuns of Medea founded the priory, on their return from Algeria, on the very spot where a sanctuary was built, not far from that of Our Lady of Grace. Pilgrimages are held on March 19, May1 and June 16. At the end of 2019, the Benedictine nuns leave their monastery. Since then, a community of Mater Dei sisters has been installed in the monastery and continues the welcome offered by the previous tenants, welcoming retreatants of all kinds and whatever their approach.
