AMERICAN CEMETERY
American Cemetery and Memorial of the Rhône, containing the graves of 861 American soldiers who died in the fighting of 1944
The Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial is the only American necropolis in southern France. It was created by Dr. Angelin German, a member of the Var Resistance, during the Liberation of Draguignan by the 551st American Battalion. It honors the Allied landing of August 15, 1944, known as "Operation Anvil Dragoon", depicted on an impressive bronze relief map by Bruno Béarzi. The cemetery contains the graves of 861 American soldiers, including 62 unknowns, who died during the fighting in 1944.
