NATURE AREA OF THE HYENA SALTWORKS
Space for exhibitions, conferences and themed tours
Inaugurated by Toulon Provence Méditerranée in 2006, this site has been owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2001. Run by the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux, it offers exhibitions, conferences and themed tours. The Hyères salt marshes are one of the most remarkable natural areas on the Var coast, easily accessible by car or bicycle from the center of Hyères. They form a group of wetlands comprising two distinct units: the Pesquiers salt marsh, with the Redon marsh, which covers a total of 550 hectares in the central part of the double tombolo of the Presqu'île de Giens, and the Vieux Salins, covering 350 hectares and stretching for almost 3 km along the coast. Favourable to the development of biodiversity, these sites offer a range of habitats perfect for flora and fauna, and are already home to over 350 bird species and 300 plant varieties. For example, a large number of birds can be seen here, such as Athena's owl, woodchat and great black-backed gull. But the Salins are also frequented by many species of butterfly, such as the Morio, the Tircis or the Shrew, not forgetting spiders typical of the region, such as the bloody saltic or the neriene radiata. The "Levée de Saint-Nicolas" trail, reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, has been laid out at Vieux Salins and joins the Espace Nature.
