ABBEY OF THE ONE
Abbaye de la Celle is a listed historical monument with a church with a single nave, in the Romanesque style of Provence.
After a long restoration, the abbey of La Celle reopened in May 2021! Hidden in the heart of the Provencal village of La Celle, this medieval abbey, classified as a historical monument, will seduce you with its Romanesque architecture and its history. But before it was the abbey we admire today, excavations revealed the presence of a Roman agricultural villa, specialized in wine production. In 1011, the Abbey of Saint Victor in Marseille received a church near Brignoles as a donation. The monks settled there, founded a male priory, then built an important female monastery, the Abbey of La Celle. The so-called "primitive" monastery is not the one we see today. Numerous reuses of the foundations of the Roman villa are attested by the excavations. The construction of the second monastery began at the end of the 12th century. These are the buildings visible today during your visit. Note the beautiful courtyard of impressive dimensions, surrounded by a cloister of four vaulted galleries. The church is a perfect example of Provençal Romanesque architecture with its unique nave. For more than 500 years this monastery was home to Benedictine nuns from the great families of Provence and Languedoc. In the 17th century, a relaxation in the respect of the rules of Saint-Benoît will see the nuns being sanctioned and transferred to a convent in Aix-en-Provence, by Mazarin in person. In 1990, the commune of La Celle acquired the abbey and launched the restoration work, with the support of the department.
