The Fountain of Marius located in the middle of the village, has a singular history
In the middle of the village stands an unusual fountain: the so-called "Marius fountain", which has a singular history. Indeed, it reuses elements of an ancient monument to the glory of the general and Roman consul, Caius Marius, winner of an epic and particularly deadly battle against Germanic invaders, in 102 B.C. It was on the territory of Pourrières that this battle took place, claiming some 200,000 victims. The very name of the village comes from the adjective "putrid", the dead of the battle having been left on the spot.
