ANNUNCIATION MUSEUM
Museum featuring a fine collection of paintings, including works by Pierre Bonnard and world-famous canvases.
The building is the former chapel of Notre-Dame de l'Annonciade built between 1510 and 1558 by the brotherhood of the Pénitents blancs charged with redeeming the Tropéziens sailors captured by the barbarians and reduced to slavery. Requisitioned during the Revolution, it was then pillaged. Sold as a national asset during the revolution in 1821, its bell tower was knocked down and the roof repaired in its present form, the interior divided into two levels and used for cutting sails and drawing up boat constructions. Several patrons and artists participated in its resurrection and transformation into a museum, including the architect Louis Süe and the painter Paul Signac, who discovered the small fishing port in 1892 on board his yacht L'Olympia. The industrialist Georges Grammont had the first floor fitted out and installed the paintings from his own collection. The museum is constantly acquiring works. All the painters exhibited have in common the practice of figurative art and the research on color and light. The collections presented range from 1890 to 1950. Works by Pierre Bonnard, André Derain, Maurice Utrillo, Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse, Paul Signac, Kees Van Dongen, Georges Seurat, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy... This museum, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2015, by presenting the masterpieces of its collection, has the privilege of presenting visitors with world-renowned paintings and exhibited in the light in which most of them were conceived.
