TOULON PROVENCE MÉDITERRANÉE OPERA
The Grand Théâtre, a neoclassical building in the heart of Toulon, has been offering a rich and varied program for over 150 years.
Although the Toulon Opera offers a rich and varied program in a listed building (inaugurated on October1, 1862), you won't have the chance to visit it this year. The building is currently closed for restoration and modernization work on the main staircase, the main auditorium and its decor, the entire stage area, the orchestra pit and all technical installations, as well as the3rd floor terrace. By 2025, it should look as good as new, just as the foyer Campra was restored to its former glory in 2022.
If you're interested in its history, this building was designed by architect Léon Feuchères. It occupies a floor space of 27 x 70 m, or almost 2,000m2, between a specially laid-out square and the brand-new boulevard Louis-Napoléon (now boulevard de Strasbourg). Architecturally, it features a monumental neoclassical façade, with round arches, grey and pink columns and Byzantine-inspired geometric friezes on the pediment.
The success of what was then the largest opera house in France was immediate, and has continued unabated over the years. In order to attract an even wider audience, the management has put the accent on musicals and offers a number of original initiatives, starting with a sound and light show during the festive season.
