THREADS OF LIFE
Gallery exhibiting superb Balinese textiles, made in the traditional way, also offering ikat weaving classes.
This gallery exhibits beautiful Balinese textiles made in the traditional way. You can see the complexity of their patterns and the knowledge behind their making, reflecting the cosmogony of the Balinese people in all its diversity. The association is supported by the International Fair Trade Organization. Its aim is to preserve the traditional art and knowledge of Balinese textiles, by financing weavers and encouraging the use of natural materials (natural cotton, pigments...). Making textiles in the traditional way can indeed take many months, even years. For economic reasons, many craftsmen have given up this process in favour of more industrial techniques, which contribute to the loss of ancestral knowledge and environmental pollution. This center offers courses inikat weaving and batik making.
The website provides a lot of information about the history, the painting exhibitions, the events, the courses... With also a very nice online shop that really makes you want to go there to discover more! We highly recommend a visit to Threads of Life, if you have some time.
Further on, you can also go to the Neka Gallery. This huge gallery is owned by the collector of the beautiful Neka Museum and features works by some of the most renowned current and former Balinese artists.
