Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Beirut
Timetable
Most shops in Beirut are open from Monday to Saturday, from 10am until late afternoon. Sundays and religious holidays are public holidays. Please note that during Ramadan, most shops remain open normally.
Budget & Tips
Beirut is a city with a high cost of living. To bring back cheap souvenirs, it is better to buy them in other tourist sites in the country.
Sales
While there is an official pay period after Christmas, the practice is not yet well established in Lebanon. Most of the time, shops sell their products when they wish.
What's very local
The Lebanese handicraft is one of the most renowned in the region and Beirut concentrates the best of what the country has to offer: wines and araks, soaps from Aleppo, textiles, carpets, goldsmithery... The capital's souks, destroyed during the civil war and renovated, now look more like a modern shopping mall than an oriental bazaar, and are home to some of the biggest international brands. To find more authentic products, head for Gemmayze or Hamra.
Tourist traps
An exceptionally rich country from an archaeological point of view, Lebanon is at the heart of the antiquities traffic in the region (aggravated by the situation in Syria). It is therefore strictly inadvisable to buy antiquities, which may have been stolen during the Syrian or even Iraqi conflict.
