PAUL RICARD INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY
An oceanographic institute offering an overview of the main marine animals and plants of the western Mediterranean.
Located on the island of Les Embiez, in Fort Saint-Pierre, in a former marine battery. Born out of the struggle of an ecologist before his time, Paul Ricard, who was convinced of everyone's responsibility to protect our oceans, this institute has never ceased to combine research and awareness, science and sharing. It is therefore no coincidence that it is one of the founding members of the Ocean and Climate Platform, one of whose objectives at COP21 was to place the oceans at the heart of international negotiations on climate change. This aquarium offers an overview of the main marine animals and plants of the western Mediterranean: seahorses, groupers, dogfish, gurnards, mullets and other surprising species. It is fed in an open circuit, the water is pumped directly from the sea. Thus, the residents have a natural environment of good quality. Another advantage is that the eggs and larvae produced in the tanks return to the sea to continue their development. Many animals reproduce here: fish such as scorpion fish, sea bass, sea bream, apogons, castagnoles, gobies... The aquarium is also a reception centre for injured sea turtles entrusted by boaters. After they have been given a makeover and marked, the Institute releases the animals back into the open sea. The museum section presents underwater archaeology, endangered species, marine biology and the main branches of Mediterranean marine animals.
