THE FORT OF REPENTANCE - MONASTERY OF SAINT MARY OF THE DESERT
Built underground at the end of the 19th century, the main purpose of the defensive fort of Repentance was to protect the pass from possible enemy intrusions. Decommissioned in 1887 and disarmed during the World First, one of the casemates was then completely destroyed in 1944 during the Second World War, destroying the life of the fort and its occupants. Since 1995, the place has housed an Orthodox monastic community, an outbuilding of the Monastery of Saint-Antoine-Le-Grand in the Drôme region: led by Father Séraphin, the community restores and rehabilitates the fort renamed "Monastery of Sainte-Marie du Désert". With his long white beard, Father Séraphin settled on the island of Porquerolles in 1995 with the authorization of Emmanuel Lopez, former director of the Port-Cros National Park.
