Probably the best pastrami on rye in Southern California can be found here. Langer's is so popular with Angelenos that the intersection of 7th Street and Alvarado Street is nicknamed Langer's Square; a godsend that a subway stop is right in front of the restaurant, making it accessible by public transport. A fabulous mix of customers - young and old, rich and poor - adds to the friendly atmosphere.

What's not to love! Long time institution in Los Angeles and just the best NY style deli west of the Hudson river. The people who serve you are friendly/funny/able. The food.....WOW! The atmosphere is "old L.A.", in the heart of the city with seedy souroundings and no parking and long waits. But, worth it!

The hyped #19 sandwich sounded wonderful but the enticing deli plate of #12 Mixed Delicatessen (Corned Beef, Pastrami, Tongue) was just too powerful. Although everything was tender, the flavor of the pastrami seasoning really shined and certainly the juiciest of the three. Beef tongue was this sliced and the most tender. Corned beef was the least tender and least flavorful but still good.

It also included a side, got fries that came out hot with Russian dressing. The accompanying mix of veggies were a perfect match: raw radish, raw carrot, green and black olives, a dill pickle, several baby sweet pickles, and a piece of green leafy lettuce. Did I mention you get 4 slices of bread? Yum!

Service was slow, but it was a weekend lunch rush. The atmosphere was lively and felt like traveling back in time several decades in a good way.

PS free parking for 90 minutes at the Langer's Deli Parking Lot a block away.

If someone says better pastrami exists anywhere else I will throw hands. Langers Rules. Also really good fries.

I decided to try their classic Ruben and I'm so glad that I did. The pastrami was meaty, smokey, and so tender that you could just pull it apart. And the rye bread has to be one of the best loafs I've ever eaten. It was flavorful and soft but still had a great chew with a crusty exterior, my waiter said that is because their loaf is twice baked to get that texture, but whatever they are doing it is clearly working. My brother also gave a great review for his beef brisket dip.

The location across from. MacArthur park can be a little challenging but the deli has a parking lot about a block away and they will validate your ticket.

The dining room and restroom was clean and the staff friendly and attentive. Top marks.
