CATHÉDRALE ET CLOITRE SAINT-VINCENT
A building with two architectural styles, and a pretty square lined with stone and timber-framed houses in Chalon-sur-Saône.
Chalon-sur-Saône is one of the few towns in France still to have a complete "cathedral group", comprising the episcopal palace, canons' houses, church and cloister. Built in the5th century, on the site of a temple, and rebuilt between the 11th and 16th centuries, the cathedral displays two architectural styles: Romanesque and Gothic. The magnificent capitals are the work of artists who worked at Cluny Abbey and Saint-Lazare Cathedral in Autun. The cathedral's exterior and first bay were renovated in the early 2000s. Construction work was halted for lack of funds, but is due to resume in spring 2024 and continue until 2027.
The cathedral opens onto a pretty square lined with stone and timber-framed houses built between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The cloister, meanwhile, is a renaissance building. Rebuilt at the end of the 19th century from walls dating back to the year 1000, it is the only preserved canonical cloister in Burgundy Franche-Comté serving a cathedral. Covered by a simple tiled roof structure, it was vaulted in stone in the 15th century. Damaged by the Huguenots in 1562 and divided into lots during the French Revolution, it was partly rebuilt in the early 20th century. Since 2013, the galleries, their decoration and the roofs have been restored. The missing roof timbers have been rebuilt, as has, in 2018 and 2019, the entire north gallery, which disappeared after the Revolution.

The interior was rather dark but at some places they have built sensors that switch on lights when you get near.
In front of the church is a lively square with restaurants
