Day 1: Canterbury
Steps: Canterbury
Canterbury is an Anglican Mecca and a magnificent medieval city.Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most beautiful in the country. There are also several fine museums. And don't miss the old streets full of stores, restaurants and cafés.

Day 2: Dover
Steps: Douvres - Dover
If the town lacks charm, the breathtaking cliffs of Dover are legendary and worth a visit in their own right, as is Dover Castle, the gigantic castle that sits enthroned over the harbour, one of the largest medieval buildings in the country.

Day 3: Sussex
Steps: Rye, Battle, Eastbourne, Herstmonceux, Lewes
From Dover, head to Sussex and spend an hour or two in Rye, a stunning medieval hilltop village. Further east, history buffs can choose between a visit to Battle, site of the famous Battle of Hastings (1066), or Herstmonceux, home to Herstmonceux Castle, a brick castle of considerable size. Then head for the coast to admire the imposing chalk cliffs of Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, unbelievably photogenic. If the days are long, or you've skipped Battle or Herstmonceux, make a final detour to Lewes, to enjoy its medieval lanes and good pubs.

Day 4: Brighton
Steps: Brighton
Don't miss the enchanting seaside city of Brighton, student, innovative, dynamic and full of life. North Laine and The Lanes are must-sees, as is the seafront and, if you have time, a visit to the exuberant Royal Pavilion.

Day 5: Portsmouth
Steps: Portsmouth
Spend a few more hours in Brighton in the morning before heading off to Portsmouth. The city suffered from the Second World War and has few old buildings, but it does boast the captivating attraction of theHistoric Dockyard, where you can spend a good half-day immersed in British maritime history, visiting cutting-edge museums and splendid vintage ships.

Day 6: Departure for the Isle of Wight
Steps: Ventnor, Cowes, Shanklin
Leave Portsmouth in the early hours of the morning to spend two days on the Isle of Wight and soak up its island charm. On the first day, don't miss Osborne House, former royal palace and holiday home of Queen Victoria. You can also visit the charming little ports of Cowes and East Cowes and, in the afternoon, enjoy the last rays of sunshine at Shanklin or Ventnor.

Day 7: Isle of Wight
Steps: Shanklin
Start with a visit to the Shanklin Chine or Blackgang Chine attractions, depending on your interests, then head for the beautiful cliffs of The Needles via the wild and unspoilt South West Coast Road. In the evening, spend the night near the ferries so you're ready for an early take-off.

Day 8: Oxford
Steps: Oxford, Southampton
Take the ferry to Southampton or Portsmouth and head up to Oxford to discover one of the oldest and best universities in the world. The architecture is of a rare elegance and it's one of the must-see cities in the south of England. Colleges, green spaces and beautiful facades add to its much-appreciated charm.
