Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

The day can be spent visiting the Gandan monastery, and one or two of the capital's museums.

Walk in the steppe

Steps: Mandalgov

Departure for Baga Gazaryn Chuluuu, an amazing granite formation in the middle of the steppes. The place is ideal for walks, which will allow you to discover, among other things, a small ruined temple, nestled in a wooded gorge (the last trees before the desert!).

Day 3

First steps in the desert

The road continues southwards, and we now enter desert areas. Several sites are worth a stop during the day, including the small Sangiyn Dalay Nuur lake and the ruins of Khukh Burd castle.

Day 4

Ongiin Monastery

Another day's drive south leads to the Ongiin monastery. Situated at the entrance to a superb gorge, this immense monastery was razed to the ground by the Soviets in the 1930s. The ruins on either side of the river exude a very special atmosphere, and you can lose yourself for hours in the ochre light of late afternoon.

Day 5

In the footsteps of the dinosaurs

The mountain landscape changes in a flat desert, to the cliffs of Bayanzag, whose bright red slice on the pastel of the decor. It was on this site that many dinosaur fossils were uncovered.

Day 6

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park

This is one of the country's largest parks. It offers a wide variety of landscapes. The Yolyn Am Gorge is a great place for walks along the river or on the surrounding mountain ridges.

Further west of Yolyn Am are the country's great sand dunes, the Khongoryn Els, behind which lies an imposing mountain range.

Heading north

Steps: Khujirt

It's time to start heading back north, towardsArvaïkheer then Khujirt. The landscape alternates between steep mountains and flatter desert.

Day 9

En route to the north (continued)

Chutes de l'Orkhon.

After a stopover in the last nomadic nomads, go on the road. There are few cultural sites on this very wild portion of the circuit, but you will enjoy unique scenery.

Arrival at Orkhon Falls

Steps: Khujirt

Arrival at the Orkhon Falls, after following the impressive valley carved out by the river in this still semi-desert landscape.

Steps: Kharkhorin

Departure for Kharkhorin and visit of themonastère d'Erdene Zuu.

Day 12

Return to Ulaanbaatar

A day of road to go to Ulaanbaatar, possibly a stop in the Hustaï National Park, which houses the takhi horses (also called "De").
