Budget & Tips
Fiji offers a number of very luxurious hotels, generally referred to asresorts. These include large establishments as well as more intimate hotels. Before booking, it's important to compare the hotel's reservation site with the booking platforms, as the latter may offer you a lower price. Resorts often offer all-inclusivepackages that include accommodation, menus, transfers and activities. These packages can include a free night or overall price reductions. It's up to you to decide whether these packages are right for you.
Fiji is a popular destination for backpackers, i.e. travelers who prefer low-cost accommodation and, being highly mobile, often travel very light (with their backpacks on their backs, hence the name backpackers). Fiji's proximity to Australia and New Zealand (approx. 3-hour flight) is one of the main reasons why young people from these countries come to Fiji. The Mamanucas and Yasawas often havedormitories, and there are also a few dormitories in Viti Levu. However, we'd like to qualify this description: the comfort and value for money of these establishments in Fiji are far from exceptional, so don't expect the perfectly clean establishments you'll find in other countries. And there isn't always a very wide range of choice in this price bracket. In our opinion, Fiji remains a rather upmarket destination when it comes to accommodation if you want a minimum of comfort.
In the intermediate price range between luxury resorts and very inexpensive accommodation, it's difficult to establish a rule for all these establishments. Some, at the higher end of the price range (between 70 and 150 euros per night), offer excellent comfort and a privileged setting with a limited number of rooms. On the other hand, some larger establishments in the €40 to €70 per night range may disappoint you with their services: the bedding is not always very good, and the establishments are noisy in the morning and evening, particularly on the first floor.
Homestays are widespread in Fiji, but not always easy to organize directly from a distance. So you'll often have to go through intermediaries (travel agencies, tour operators). On site, you can always ask for homestay addresses. It's a great way to spend the night in a traditional village, take part in the kava ceremony and discover Fijian culture. But don't expect much in the way of comfort.
To be booked
Fiji mainly attracts tourists from Australia and New Zealand (around 50% of its customers) due to its geographical proximity. During the Easter vacation period, prices are often more expensive. During the southern hemisphere summer vacations (December and January), Fiji is not overcrowded, as this corresponds to the period when cyclones can form, although there are slightly more tourists in December. The most popular tourist months (June to September) are during the dry season. Diving trips, including accommodation, should ideally be organized in advance, and there are even peaks in the number of visitors, depending on the moon's cycle!
What's very local
This is not necessarily the case in large resorts, but often in small establishments (even upmarket ones) it is customary to take your shoes off before entering communal areas.
A cash register is often left at the entrance to the establishment for the staff (Christmas cash register, for example), and if you are satisfied with your stay this is where you can leave a tip at your discretion.
For food lovers
Full board. For hotels located on small islands, full board is often compulsory: in any case, you often have no other option for eating out. Hotels therefore offer"meal plans" that include the 3 meals of the day.
Breakfast : sweet (fruit, yoghurt, cakes) will often be served before savoury (omelettes, bread...), which may be a little surprising the first time compared to brunch in France.
