Most restaurants open continuously from 10am to 10pm with no break between lunch and dinner service. Happy hour is usually between 3pm and 5pm, the off-peak hours, and is ideal for enjoying cocktails and appetizers at reduced prices. Note, however, that the covid has had a significant impact on the restaurant industry: many waiters and cooks have deserted for more lucrative options. In 2022, restaurants and snack bars are running on reduced hours and most have chosen to open only for one service or a few days a week.

Budget & Tips

It is difficult to eat cheaply in Hawaii, the snack bars or restaurants offer dishes at an average of 15-25 US$, to which you must add taxes and tip (about 15% of the price). The total is often much higher than what you expected, especially if you add a dessert or a drink. Shopping at the supermarket is not really cheaper, unless you have a map of the stores or go to the Asian supermarkets (KTA and Don Quijote are the cheapest supermarkets). The best deal is definitely the food-trucks that you can find everywhere and that serve quality food, for 10-15 US$

The local way

Hawaii has many typical and unavoidable local dishes: shave ice, loco moco, lomilomi, laulau, kalua pork that can be found in most restaurants and snack bars. But the specialty not to be missed under any circumstances is the fish taco. All restaurants offer them at varying prices. Most of the time it is an assortment of three tacos which allows you to mix the ingredients and try several fish, accompanied by rice and salad and a sauce of your choice. It is hearty and healthy, we love it! Another specialty: the pupus. They are assorted appetizers typically Hawaiian, generally composed of fried shrimps, soy beans, salted peas and sushi. Some include poke, raw fish or tacos.

Tourist traps

One of the most popular Hawaiian specialties is the shave ice: it is a cup of crushed ice sprinkled with fruity syrups. The portions are generous and the colors are often very nice, which allows the snack bars to sell them for 10-15 US$. A rather exorbitant price for water and syrup... Fortunately, there are small places where you can get them for 3-4 US$ along the roads or in food-trucks, and it's better!
