LA MALADRERIE
A beautiful medieval house with typical architecture. It has three particular chimneys, one of which is in the Saracen style.
At the foot of the Écornebœuf hill in the municipality of Coulounieix-Chamiers, on the banks of the River Isle and just a boat ride from Périgueux, this historic monument is known by many names (Maison des Anglais, Maladrerie, Hôpital Charroux...), a sign of the interest people have shown in it over the years. To see it, follow the path along the canal from the quayside. You'll see it between the trees lining the river, and as you continue, you'll be able to cross by the Campniac ferry and follow the road past the house. Its architectural style dates it back to medieval times. It's recognizable by its three tall chimneys, each different from the next. One appears conical with its stack of carved stones, the next has a square base with a stack that resembles those card castles we know. The last is more discreet, almost insignificant. From its southern facade, two staircases climb up to two arched doorways. The façade appears bright with several windows, while the other side, facing north, has fewer openings. The massive construction has defied the centuries, since it is estimated to have been built during the 12th century. Its real role? An ancient hospital or hospice. The texts say so. But there were no lepers. The building is attractive and the walk pleasant. It's a great way to walk along the cliffs of Écornebœuf, where you can see the remains of troglodyte dwellings.
