ABBAYE NOTRE-DAME DE BONNE ESPÉRANCE
Abbey with a Cistercian abbey church in the forest of the Double, a place of silence and nature conducive to meditation
The Abbey is both hidden in the Double forest and open to the world, with 40,000 visitors a year. This place of silence and nature is ideal for meditation. On site, visitors can enter the abbey church, renovated in 2018. Simple and sober, it is faithful to the Cistercian monastic tradition. The monastery is currently occupied by 22 working nuns: since 2000, they have been shaping the famous cheese matured in walnut liqueur. Production has retained an artisanal character, despite the hiring of a few salaried employees. The buildings, gardens and cheese dairy are not open to the public. A parking lot, benches and picnic tables are available for visitors. Since 2019, the religious community has decided to open its doors to woofers, volunteer workers on the organic farm on a work-for-housing basis. Retreats are possible, with time for reading, prayer, meditation and walking. Retreaters can organize their time as they wish, and participate freely in prayer. In 2020, the opportunity arose to collaborate with a family, the Dumonts, who were looking for a meaningful entrepreneurial project. In a shared adventure, they manage the cheese dairy and steer development projects. Together, they share the same human values and the love of a job well done and sustainable in a short circuit.
