THE PINARD MILL
An exceptional opportunity to visit a mill that has changed little since 1800. Its production tools are intact.
The Pinard mill is without a doubt one of the most beautiful mills in activity in Périgord, built in granite on the banks of the Doue, in a deep and wooded valley, below a water reservoir. After five years of restoration, it has started to work again after thirty years of inactivity. A powerful oak trough wheel, driven by the water from a wooden courier, or "track", above the wheel, operates the flour mill and the nut mill. In the family for six generations, the mill is very old since archive documents attest to its existence in 1249. Its owner, François Laguionie, who perpetuated a long tradition of craftsmanship, died in 2013 but the mill continues to run and can be visited by appointment with the CPIE de Varaigne.
These visits are open to the public or during educational activities with schools. We discover the functioning of a mill with the wheels, the gears to drive the millstones. We learn about the ingenuity of the builders who built this mill in this narrow valley to take advantage of the hydraulic energy and to carry out essential works for the daily life. The millstone for grinding flour or making walnut oil has a particularity that you will have the chance to notice during this visit. The mill is nestled at the bottom of the Doue valley, the access is by a small path going down into the valley, the parking is a few dozen meters from this jewel of the pre-industrial era.
