CATHEDRALE SAINT-FRONT
This is the must-see building in the old town! This incredibly graceful stone vessel soars to the sky.
A must-see during your stay in Périgueux, Saint-Front Cathedral is not to be missed during your visit to the old town. Indeed, this imposing church soars skyward with incomparable grace, with its Byzantine Greek cross architecture. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was built to welcome pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. It wasn't until the 17th century that it was officially consecrated as a cathedral. The interest of this remarkable edifice also lies in its architecture, which is unique in France, blending Byzantine and Greek styles: its restoration in the 19th century by the architect Paul Abadie added twelve oriental belfries to the five already existing on its domes, giving it its current physiognomy. With its 60 m high steeple, it was even a model for the construction of the famous Sacré-Coeur in Paris. Once inside, you'll be able to admire remarkable furnishings, including a 17th-century Baroque altarpiece, a great organ built by Joseph Merklin in 1867, sumptuous 19th-century stained-glass windows and a Stations of the Cross by Jacques-Emile Lafon. For a more complete experience, you can visit the cloister or book a rooftop tour. Finally, to appreciate the breathtaking views over the city, take a break in the Thoin garden before heading to the Barris bridge for an unforgettable souvenir photo of the cathedral. From every angle, it's simply breathtaking!
