MUSEE MILITAIRE DU PÉRIGORD
Museum with store in Périgueux, displaying various items tracing the military history of France and the region.
From the outside, the museum will seem a little small, tucked away in its alley. It is in fact three houses from different periods, a labyrinth of rooms and corridors on three levels where it is pleasant to get lost. Its wealth is exceptional, nothing less than one of the most beautiful museums in France in its specialty after Saint-Cyr, the Invalides and the Foreign Legion. More than 20,000 items retrace the military history of France and the region on several floors: you will recognize the outfits of French soldiers, but also German, the bowls that have seen the trenches, and of course weapons, shells, guns, badges. More moving still, you will be able to observe the kits of chaplains or nurses, painted canvases, drawings, as many testimonies. Treasures. It is a place of memory to be recommended to the younger generations. The First World War, the colonial wars, the Resistance and the Deportation are evoked at length. A display case pays tribute to the5th Dragons,5th and 9th Chasseurs, three armoured army and cavalry regiments garrisoned locally until 1994. A library is filled with all kinds of works on the war. A shop was recently created with products related to the themes of the museum: cardboard military figurines to assemble, plastic figurines, games, documents and magazines of the museum Le Briscard, etc. The museum is run by passionate volunteers. In low season, the opening hours may vary.
