DEVIL'S ROSARY AND WOBBLY ROCK
According to legend, these granite blocks were thrown there as a defense by a young novice pursued and tempted by the Devil.
Périgord is full of legends and tales. Among the most famous in Périgord Vert is the legend of the novice and the Devil at Saint-Estèphe. The story goes that these granite blocks were thrown there as a defense by a young novice pursued and tempted by the Devil. With nothing else to hand, he sacrificed the beads of his rosary, which immediately turned to stone and frightened off the Evil One. The wobbly rock, a 3x3-meter block of granite, was left balanced on a rocky table by the slow work of the waters of the river in the middle of which it stands. Contrary to the young monk's unshakeable faith, this rock sways easily with a simple push. A string (or granite chaos) of granite boulders stretches for a hundred meters or so, with the water lapping discreetly here and there. A bief (former canal bringing water to the "Petits Moulins") has been laid out. It invites you to discover plants along an ethno-botanical trail. If you ever go for a walk from the Grand Etang to the Etang des Cygnes, climb the "Chapelet du Diable" and twist a coin under the "Roc Branlant" - it's said to bring good luck if you keep it in your pocket! This fabulous story will amuse young and old alike along the way. The trail starts from the parking lot in the center of Saint-Estèphe and is very well signposted. Beware: the end is steep and staircase-like.
