CHÂTEAU DES BERNARDIÈRES
Château Les Bernardières, built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Nizonne, features a large Renaissance-style dwelling next to its medieval keep.
Château Les Bernardières stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Nizonne. Here, in 1377, Bertrand du Guesclin drove out the English after setting fire to the castle. Rebuilt in the 17th century, the castle passed into the hands of Antoine d'Authon, a privateer better known as Barbarossa. Later, the Counts of Aydie enlarged the château by adding terraces. Next to the medieval keep, the 17th-century construction consists of a vast Renaissance dwelling. Situated a little way from the village, it has been patiently restored by its current owners.
