PIRAILLAN TANKS
Visit the former fishponds at Lège-Cap-Ferret, transformed into a protected natural area in 1997.
Built in the 19th century, these former fish ponds, witnesses of a remarkable past where men lived in total harmony with their environment, have been a protected natural area since 1997. Reclaimed by the Conservatoire du Littoral in 1995, when they housed a campsite, they have once again become a wilderness where nature has regained its rights. A site of around forty hectares, it is home to a great diversity of plant and animal species, including many birds attracted by the repopulated fish tanks. Reserve wardens even conserve dead trees to provide habitat for insects and birds. Two observation and listening circuits are marked out for a free stroll. Discovery visits with a naturalist are organized by the tourist office.
