THE CANON

Have you seen the cannon in front of the former town hall? It is a souvenir of the Revolution war, when people feared an English invasion on the beaches of Arcachon Bay, the small oyster-farming village owes its Canon name to this impressive marine cannon discovered on the beach. Therefore, it is one of the most beautiful villages of Lège-Cap-Ferret. It was not built like the others (following the natural bends of the coast) but on earthworks built by the oyster trees in the 19th century. You will enjoy walking on the pier where the fishermen fish with rod or with net, eat something at L'Arkéséon, this bar/restaurant/tobacco "of everything" with very good platters of seafood and good oysters freshly brought down to land by the working oyster farmers. They are there, omnipresent, which gives this village a very special atmosphere. But, above all, you will enjoy strolling in the Sainte-Catherine main street paved with oysters shells crushed by passers-by who come to admire the fishermen's huts with bright colors and beautiful names. The small and pretty oyster-farming village of Canon remains very popular among painters and photographers.
