NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE OF SALT MEADOWS
Nature reserve at Lège-Cap-Ferret, comprising dunes, mudflats, former fish tanks, meadows and woodland.
Straddling the communes of Lège-Cap Ferret and Arès, the National Nature Reserve of the salt meadows is a protected site which extends over hundreds of hectares. Living at the rhythm of the tides, the biggest zone of salt meadows of Aquitaine is shared between the fresh water of the small brooks and the sea water brought by the wide. The salt meadows of Arès and Lège are salt marshes renowned not only in France, but also in all Europe, for the richness of its wild heritage. The reserve is composed of dunes, mudflats, old fish tanks, meadows and wet woodland, as well as more than 200 species of plants, from the cork oak to the tamarisk, through the graceful orchid. Contemplate majestic grey herons and birds of prey from the observation point. According to popular wisdom, if their migration takes place before August 15, the winter will be early and harsh. You can get there from the oyster port of Arès or via the path starting from the Résinier hut in Lège-Cap-Ferret. Whatever your way, you will be able to crisscross this magnificent preserved natural space on foot. But do not move away from the marked out paths to avoid the trampling and cause irreversible degradations. Enthusiasts will appreciate the visit accompanied by a nature guide who will be able to answer all your questions. Watch carefully, he will show you the cistude turtles blending in with the driftwood, or the green lizards hiding on the edge.
