LE JARDIN DE BEL AIR
A stroll through the bromeliads, orchids, calebassiers, cocoa trees, coconut trees, balisiers and many other tropical plants.
Located in Morne Pitault, the Jardin de Bel Air stretches across a steeply sloping site that bears witness to the island's ancient volcanic activity. Creating this haven of peace was no easy task, but Jean-Louis Marie-Rose and his wife succeeded in the mad challenge of cultivating all the plots on this rugged terrain. It took them nine years of hard work to allow this rather rebellious nature to express itself freely. Today, the Jardin de Bel Air rolls out its almost 4,000m2 of fruit trees, tropical flowers and medicinal plants in staircases. A host of plants flourish here: bromeliads, orchids, calabashes, Cytherean plums, cocoa trees, coconut palms, dracenas, balisiers, roses and many other tropical plants.
All the plants in the garden were introduced by the owners. But they all seem to live in perfect symbiosis. It has to be said that they are cultivated with the greatest respect for nature, without pesticides or fertilizers, but with ancestral cultivation techniques, dear to Jean-Louis Marie-Rose. You'll come across an astonishing collection of fruits (pomme-liane, barbadine, pomme cannelle, cerise péyi...), root vegetables (including coco bourik yam), rimed razié, several varieties of sugar cane... At the end of the tour, take a look at the little Antan Lontan museum with its fine collection of sewing machines, then go and feed the farm animals. Please note that visits are by appointment only.
