Timetable

Traditional restaurants tend to be open for lunch and dinner, with a break in between. Here we don't eat too late, and kitchens generally close around 2pm at lunchtime and 10pm in the evening. Recently opened restaurants are often open continuously from 12pm to 10pm, or even 11pm. Monday is the closing day for most. In August, most Portuguese go on vacation, and you'll find many establishments closed. This can be a little frustrating.

Budget & Tips

To eat cheaply, you'll need to go to small neighborhood restaurants where you can have lunch for around €15 per person. Tapas restaurants, wine bars and international cuisine are often more expensive. With drinks, you're looking at around €30 per person.

What costs extra

In every restaurant, you'll be charged for the "couvert" - the bread often accompanied by olives and cheese. If you don't touch it, you won't be charged for it (normally). You can even say at the outset that you don't want it, and it will be removed from the table.

The local way

It's very rare in Lisbon, but you can still find restaurants where the menu mentions "dose" and "demi-dose". Unless you want to share the dish, we strongly advise you to take a half-dose, otherwise you'll end up with a giant portion.

To be avoided

Here you will not be asked for a carafe of water in the restaurants. They will look at you strangely or bring you a bottle of water (for a fee). In the cafeterias, you should know that there are usually glasses and a carafe available for everyone at the counter.

Smokers

The legislation is the same as in France, normally we do not smoke in restaurants.

Tourist traps

In some places, such as the street that starts from the Maria II Theatre, there are tourist restaurants. They have a terrace or a nice view but the quality is not there, especially in relation to the price. They usually have reelers. Without being total scams, it's not really worth it.
