Bars get ready for the evening from 6.30pm. Once the aperitif is over at 9pm, the night begins and the nightclubs open their doors as in France at 11pm, but the crowd doesn't arrive until around midnight.

Budget & Tips

An evening cocktail can cost from €7 to €15, and a glass of wine from €4 to €8. To get into a nightclub, expect to pay between €25 and €30 with a drink, and up to €50 for the jet-set nightclubs of Tigullio and Riviera.

Tickets for concerts and operas at the Teatro Carlo Felice cost between €30 and €95.

If you're an avid night owl, reserving a table with a bottle will ensure you get into a nightclub, without having to queue.

Night transport

In Genoa, the metro stops around 9pm and night buses are few and far between. If you're going out late, the best way to get home is by cab, for a reasonable fare.

Age restrictions

In Italy, the legal drinking age is 18. Italian law prohibits the sale of alcohol in cafés, bars and discos to anyone under 18. Be sure to carry your identity card with you at all times, as proof of your majority.

What's very local

Italians dress to go out in the evening. Matching clothes, accessories and make-up, shirts for men... Nobody's a slouch, so if you don't want to stand out, take care of your appearance!

As in France, smoking is banned in all indoor areas.
