GABARRES DE BERGERAC
A relaxing and instructive walk where you will discover the importance that navigation has had for centuries for the valley.
You will learn that, since Gallo-Roman times, the Dordogne was the main communication route between the Massif Central, the Auvergne and Bordeaux. After the autumn rains, when the water became high enough, the "gabarriers" (boatmen) risked their lives to face the rapids of the upper Dordogne on these rudimentary boats. When they arrived in port, they were destroyed and sold with their cargo. Following the footsteps of Cyrano, the wine route and the bastides, you will discover these flat-bottomed boats, the history of inland navigation and the great historical facts of the old town of Bergerac. Diego owns three barges, and offers several tours, from 50 minutes to about 3h30, departing from Bergerac or Creysse. The longest ones even include a wine tasting! You will enter a real nature reserve where, depending on the season, you can photograph herons, kites, cormorants, kingfishers, water turtles...
You will also have the possibility of renting the gabarre by the hour for all occasions. For a unique and intimate experience, you can privatize a gabarre for 1 to 3 hours. Imagine a declaration of love on the water... even the least romantic will melt! But groups are also welcome, with advantageous rates and on reservation of course.
Whether you like nature, the history of the territory or simply have a good time with friends, family, couples, solo... We bet you will enjoy the experience!
