ABBAYE DE CHANCELADE
Discover the fascinating history and charm of Chancelade Abbey, now a center for a community of canons.
This abbey, by its discreet charm and its location, is worth the detour alone. Take a seat on the large square, then take the time to wander around. The purely Romanesque style and its dazzling white stone are the first details you notice in this hollow of the Beauronne valley. Founded by the abbot Foucault and built from the 10th to the 12th century, it has been classified as a historical monument since 1909. The English did not spare it, and transformed it into a garrison in the 1360's. Then, the Wars of Religion led to its looting and burning. It owes its salvation to Alain de Solminihac, then bishop of Cahors, who returned to Périgord in 1638 to consecrate the church. In 1998, a community of Canons Regular of Saint Victor moved back to Chancelade and, in 2004, the Abbot's house and its park were bought by the bishopric to develop a spiritual center. The church is a Romanesque building with a cruciform plan: the lower part of the walls and the windows remain from the original construction. The nave was vaulted in five bays in 1630, and the transept crossing is covered with a dome on pendentives, topped by a square bell tower.
The spiritual center Alain de Solminihac, animated by the community of the Canons Regular of Chancelade, offers conferences and meetings throughout the year. Numerous speakers will allow you to deepen your faith, to reflect on the stakes of bioethics, or to better understand the religious history of France.
